DAY 1: Explore Lake Natron and Surroundings
  • Distance: 5 – 7 km (3-4 miles) of exploration
  • Walking Time: 2-3 hours
  • Sleeping Camp: Engaresero Camp

Today is dedicated to exploring the unique features of the Lake Natron area. After breakfast, you’ll take a guided walk to the lake’s edge, where you’ll witness the otherworldly landscape of salt flats, and red-hued waters, and if the timing is right, thousands of flamingos. The walk is easy and mostly flat, allowing you to enjoy the scenery without much strain. In the afternoon, you can hike to nearby waterfalls, which involve some moderate climbing over rocks but rewards you with refreshing pools and stunning views. Lunch is a packed meal, enjoyed during your explorations. The evening includes a hearty dinner at the camp, with plenty of water available throughout the day.

Day 2: Ascent to Ol Doinyo Lengai Summit
  • Distance: 8 – 10 km (5-6 miles)
  • Walking Time: 6-8 hours (Night ascent)
  • Sleeping Camp: Return to Engaresero Camp

After an early dinner and some rest, your hike to Ol Doinyo Lengai begins around midnight. The ascent starts gradually but quickly becomes steep as you climb the mountain’s volcanic slopes. The terrain is challenging, with loose ash and sharp rocks making the path slippery in places. The higher you go, the steeper it gets, with the final stretch requiring significant effort. The reward is the breathtaking sight of the sun rising over the Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and the distant peaks. At the summit, the air is thin, and the crater might emit steam, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. You’ll have snacks and water breaks along the way, and a packed breakfast at the summit. After enjoying the view, you’ll begin the descent, which is quicker but equally demanding on the legs. Return to Engaresero Camp for a well-deserved rest and a nourishing meal.
