MT. KILIMANJARO DAY HIKE

MT. KILIMANJARO DAY TRIP

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa. It stands an impressive 19,341 feet tall over the Tanzanian plains. Mount Kilimanjaro is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, meaning it is not part of a mountain range (such as Mount Everest and the Himalayans).
Many people climb Kilimanjaro every year. The activity is not just for hard core backpackers and experienced mountaineers. Experts agree that anyone who is in average physical shape can climb Kilimanjaro, which is why the mountain is so popular amongst the general adventure seeking population. No technical mountaineering ability is required.

There are six major routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. We at African Delight offer low to medium or high fitness options via the Marangu (Rain Forest), Shira (Shira Plateau) or Machame (Rain Forest) trails with our experienced and certified Mountain guides. This day trip is perfect for those who want to get the tasteof hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro but have partial time

  • Walking Time: 5 – 7 hours
  • Zone: Rainforest

Enjoy a short trip to Mt. Kilimanjaro as there is so much more to Kilimanjaro than her summit, this one day trip starting at Marangu Gate (1859m) will have hikers experience wonderful landscape, impressive vegetation and native wildlife of black and white Colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and various bird species. A 3-to-4-hour hike will get you to our final point, Mandara Hut (2700m) where a short walk will get you to the Maundi Crater. A wonderful view of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Kenya and northern Tanzania can be enjoyed at this altitude This day trip is perfect for those who want to get the taste of hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro but have partial time.
The Mt. Kilimanjaro Day Trip starts with a transfer from Arusha or Moshi to the Marangu Gate of the Kilimanjaro National Park (1840m). After a briefing with one of our guides at your hotel/pick-up point in the morning, you will be taken to Marangu Gate, which is the eastern entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park (1,860 m/6,046 f).

You’ll begin hiking up to Mandara Hut (2,700 m/8,858 ft) after completing the brief formalities of attaining the climbing permits and registering with the rescue agency. We easily enter a thick rainforest where we are surrounded by old trees covered in moss, enormous ferns, lichen, and other local plants. We keep a keen eye out for black and white colobus monkeys as well as other wild animals as we move through the rainforest.
We arrive at Mandara Hut (2670m), where we have lunch, after a 4-hour walk. Here we rest before visiting Maundi Crater with our mountain guide. From the crater, we enjoy wonderful views of the Kenyan interior and spectacular sights of Northern Tanzania. After a spectacular exploration of the crater and lunch at Mandara Hut, we start our 2-hour descent back into the tropical jungle and eventually arrive at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m).
Walking slowly will allow you to take in the scenery and search for anything you might have missed on the ascent. At the gate, we say our goodbyes and transfer you back to Moshi or Arusha bringing your memorable Mt. Kilimanjaro 1 day hike.

LEMOSHO ROUTE DAY TRIP

DAY 1: Lemosho Gate (2100m) to Shira Plateau (280m)
  • Distance: 11 km/ 7 miles
  • Walking Time: 5 – 7 hours
  • Zone: Rainforest
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Often considered the most beautiful route featuring captivating scenes, Lemosho is one of the best routes for acclimatization. This route takes hikers through rain forest inhabited wildlife to the world-famous Shira Plateau.
The Shira Plateau shows the remains of an ancient caldera, a volcanic crater that expired around half a million years ago. Today, it stands as a World Heritage Site, boasting deep valleys and weather-beaten lava flows. These are wonderfully framed near the Kibo Massif, which resembles twisted, modern sculptures. This is one of the few routes where an armed ranger accompanies our groups, since there are still animals in the forest around the Lemosho Glades.

Early in the morning of your Kilimanjaro day trip, we will pick you up your hotel (Moshi/Arusha) after you’ve had a heavy breakfast at around 7am and we drive off to Londrossi (West Kilimanjaro) for about 2hrs. After finalising your registration at Londrossi gate– an active day in Tanzania’s wilderness area awaits you.
At an altitude of 2,100m the day trip begins. This hike takes you through a forest reserve, where you can look out for Colobus Monkeys and crested turacos in the trees. The ascent is more than 1,000m through tropical montane forest that is home to variety of animals & birds. After a 3-5 hours we will have reached the beautiful rugged landscape of Shira Plateau 3,500m above sea level where is the highpoint of our day.
When the weather permits, you may enjoy views of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s tallest summit, and its northern glaciers via several paths led by our experienced mountain guide and an armed ranger. The views of the world’s tallest free-standing peak are contrasted by the broad grasslands of Kenya’s Amboseli National Park and the deep valley of the Simba River. When you approach Shira Crater’s northern rim, make a brief stop at several viewing sites to witness the volcanic cones dotting the
landscape below.

Hike at your own speed while taking in the scenery. It is a modest hike that does not need a high level of fitness. However, the air is thinner over 3,500m, so take your time and appreciate the pristine scenery and the presence of the giant Kilimanjaro. We will then proceed to Shira Base Camp for lunch, where you may be able to observe the activity of porters, chefs, guides, and customers coming or setting up camp.Late afternoon we’ll start our descent back to Londrossi Gate and drive you back to your accommodation, allowing you to make the most of your time on the mountain.

For those with limited fitness or mobility
It is possible to drive all the way up to the Shira Plateau and then gently explore the surrounding areas on foot.
Reasonable levels of fitness would be ideal for the longer hike.

MACHAME ROUTE DAY TRIP

DAY 1: Machame Gate (1790m) to Machame Camp (3010m)
  • Distance: 11 km/ 7 miles
  • Walking Time: 5 – 7 hours
  • Zone: Rainforest
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

The Machame route is also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb, in
contrast to the easier Marangu route, which is known as the Coca Cola route. This day hike will start off at
Machame gate (1800m) to Machame Camp (2980m) and back. The hike is on steeper trails, unlike the gradual incline of other routes meaning a high level of fitness is
required.

The Mt. Kilimanjaro Day Trip starts with a transfer from Arusha or Moshi (07:00am – 08:00am) to the Machame Gate, located in the southern base of Mount (1840m). We will enter the park and complete your registration and start off the steep hike within Kilimanjaro’s lush, fertile, montane rainforest where the trail may be steep and slippery, so trekking poles, good footgear & gaiters are advised.
You will enjoy a picnic lunch along the way before reaching Machame Camp our high point of the day. Machame Camp is just above the forest zone and when it is clear, there are views of Shira Ridge and the summit itself ahead.
Later you descend back through the forest trail back to the park gate (estimated 3-4 hours) where our driver will be waiting to transfer you and your guide back to Moshi.

What if you want a full Mt. Kilimanjaro hike to the summit?

While Kilimanjaro day hikes are a wonderful opportunity to experience the spectacular Kilimanjaro up close, they will not provide you with the same satisfaction and sense of accomplishment as a complete climb to Uhuru, Africa’s highest mountain (5 895 m/ 19,341 ft).

These day tours will only take you to the rainforest and moorland climatic zones. Meanwhile, a full trip to the top will take you through the highland desert and arctic zones, each with their own distinct ecosystems, not to mention the amazing visual bliss you will undoubtedly feel at the summit zone.

Although Mt Kilimanjaro is the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, climbing up to Uhuru Peak requires no specific mountaineering expertise or equipment. The majority of individuals who successfully reach the summit are in average physical condition and have no climbing experience. More importantly, choose a climbing program that will provide you with sufficient progressive acclimatization and optimize your chances of success. Our experts are the only ones who can assist you with this
