6 DAYS MARANGU ROUTE

THE BEST KILIMANJARO 6 DAYS MARANGU ROUTE

The 6 day Marangu Route,  is one of Kilimanjaro’s most popular package paths. Also known as the Cocacola route, Marangu approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeast and is the only path on Kilimanjaro offering hut accommodations, with communal dining area and basic facilities providing hikers with a comfortable alternative to camping.

This six-day itinerary provides an extra day for acclimatization, which is crucial for increasing your chances of reaching the summit. While it uses the same path for both ascent and descent, the Marangu Route offers a comfortable straightforward climb, making it a good choice for those seeking a less rugged Kilimanjaro experience.

The forest is alive with the sounds of nature, offering a peaceful and refreshing start to your climb. As you ascend, the well-maintained path leads you to Mandara Hut, nestled in a forest clearing. The first day’s trek is relatively short and gentle, allowing you to ease into the journey. The hut provides a cozy retreat where you can relax, enjoy a hot meal, and soak in the natural beauty surrounding you.

  • Distance: 12 km/7.5 miles
  • Walking Time: 6 – 8 hours
  • Zone: Moorland

We start the second day of  your 6 day Marangu Route hike, you’ll leave the forest behind and enter the unique moorland zone. The landscape transforms dramatically as you climb, with giant heathers, lobelias, and groundsels replacing the lush greenery. The trail offers sweeping views of the plains below and the imposing Mawenzi Peak in the distance. A short detour to Maundi Crater provides a stunning vantage point, perfect for photography. As you continue, the trail becomes more open and exposed, with fewer trees and more expansive views. By the time you reach Horombo Hut, you’ll be treated to mesmerizing views of both Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The Horombo hut is a bustling spot, often filled with trekkers from various routes such as the Rongai route, sharing stories and experiences from the mountain.

DAY 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,720m)
  • Distance:  Optional 5 – 10 km (3 – 6 miles)
  • Walking Time: 3 – 5 hours
  • Zone: Moorland
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day three of your 6 days Marangu Route is dedicated to acclimatization, a crucial part of your journey that significantly enhances your chances of reaching the summit. This day is not just about resting; it’s a strategic pause that allows your body to adjust to the higher altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness as you continue your ascent. Your day begins with a leisurely breakfast at Horombo Hut, surrounded by the stunning scenery of the moorland zone. The landscape here is both beautiful and surreal, with open plains stretching out beneath the dramatic backdrop of Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The air is crisp, and the views are expansive, offering a perfect setting to take in the raw beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro.

For your acclimatization hike, you have the option to trek to the Zebra Rocks, a striking geological formation located about 3 km (1.9 miles) from Horombo Hut. The Zebra Rocks, named for their distinctive black and white striped patterns, are an impressive sight against the stark landscape. This hike is relatively easy, taking about 3-4 hours round trip, and serves as an excellent way to help your body adjust to the altitude.

After your hike, you’ll return to Horombo Hut, where you can relax and enjoy the companionship of fellow trekkers. This acclimatization day is a crucial part of the 6-day Marangu Route, providing both physical and mental preparation for the challenges that lie ahead. By the end of the day, you’ll feel more confident and ready to tackle the higher altitudes as you continue your journey toward the summit.

DAY 4: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
  • Distance: 10 km / 6.2 miles
  • Walking Time: 6 – 8 hours
  • Zone: Alpine Desert
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

The day begins with an early breakfast at Horombo Hut, where you’ll enjoy a final glimpse of the peaceful moorland before setting out on the trail. As you ascend, the vegetation gradually disappears. This day marks a significant shift in your trek as you leave behind the relative comfort and vegetation of the moorland zone and venture into the harsh and barren alpine desert.

One of the highlights of today’s hike is crossing the Saddle, a vast, flat plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. This barren, otherworldly landscape is covered in loose scree and gravel, making the walk challenging. The silence and isolation are striking, with only the crunch of your boots and the wind breaking the stillness. Despite the difficulty, the views are stunning, with Mawenzi’s jagged peaks to the left and the towering Kibo ahead.

After 6-8 hours of trekking, you’ll finally reach Kibo Hut, your base for the night and the last stop before your summit attempt. The hut itself is a simple stone structure, offering basic shelter from the elements. You’ll have an early dinner, followed by a briefing from your guides on what to expect during the summit attempt. The excitement will be huge as you lie down to rest, knowing that in just a few hours, you’ll be embarking on the most demanding and rewarding part of the 6 days Marangu Route.

DAY 5: Kibo Hut (4,700m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and Descend to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
  • Distance: 21 km (13 miles)
  • Trekking Time: 12 – 15 hours
  • Vegetation Zone: Arctic to Moorland
  • Meals:Breakfast & Lunch

Day 5 of the 6 days Marangu Route hike up Mt. Kilimanjaro is the climactic day of your trek, starting with a midnight departure from Kibo Hut. The ascent to Uhuru Peak is both physically and mentally demanding. The trek begins in darkness, illuminated only by the glow of headlamps as you navigate the icy, steep slopes of the Arctic zone. The path is challenging, with loose stones and sharp rocks underfoot. The cold, thin air makes breathing more difficult, and the climb is relentless, but each step brings you closer to your goal.

As dawn approaches, the landscape transforms into a dramatic frozen world, with stunning views of glaciers and ice formations. Reaching Gilman’s Point on the crater rim is a significant milestone, offering a moment to catch your breath and take in the surrounding beauty. From Gilman’s Point, the final stretch to Uhuru Peak involves a strenuous walk along the crater rim. The summit is an exhilarating sight, with the sun rising over the horizon, casting a golden light over the snowy peaks and the vast plains below.

The sense of achievement at Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, is profound, marking the culmination of your climb.

After a brief celebration and taking in the breathtaking views, you’ll begin the descent. The journey back to Kibo Hut for a short rest feels less tiring but still requires focus. From Kibo Hut, you continue your descent through the moorland zone, where the terrain becomes easier and the air thicker. After a hot meal and rest we start the long trek to Horombo Hut, but the satisfaction of having reached the summit makes the journey more enjoyable. Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, you’ll be welcomed by the familiar surroundings of the moorland, where you can rest, recover, and reflect on your incredible achievement. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut

DAY 6: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Transfer To Hotel
  • Distance: 12km /7 miles
  • Walking Time: 4-6 hours

  • Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

The trail retraces your steps, offering a final opportunity to enjoy the rich biodiversity and scenic beauty of Kilimanjaro. As you descend, you’ll notice the air becoming richer in oxygen, making the trek easier and more enjoyable. The path is often busy with other trekkers, all sharing the excitement of completing their journey.
