Experience the 4 days Mt. Meru Hiking adventure to the summit of the second highest peak in Tanzania, through lush areas of tropical woodland into high altitude alpine desert with unrivaled views of this dormant volcano, that was formed following the formation of the Great Rift Valley, when a million years ago the volcano that stood in this area lost its peak due to a massive explosion. This explosion shaped Mount Meru into a horseshoe. Mount Meru is still an active volcano, with the most recent minor eruption being a century ago, in 1901.
Because the mountain is located in the heart of Arusha National Park, your trek on the first and last days has a unique appeal. Baboons, buffaloes, giraffes, and other species may be found in the mountain’s lowlands. The ascent passes through several ecological zones, from grassland to rainforest, and from heath and moorland to alpine desert. A massive mountain that is often over shadowed by the might of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Our company representative will pick you up from Kilimanjaro Airport or Arusha airport upon landing and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi.
Once settled in at your hotel, you will meet your appointed guide for the trek who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented on this day.
We will also confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance.
After breakfast, we will travel to Arusha National Park (2.5 hours from Moshi and 1.5 hours from Arusha) and then directly to the Meru’s starting point, Momella gate. Your guides will then organize the entrance permission requirements at Momella Gate, and you will begin your walk to Miriakamba Huts. On the route, wildlife animals such as zebras, monkeys, antelopes, and buffaloes are likely to be observed and we will be accompanied by an armed ranger. When you arrive to Miriakamba Huts, you will be served a hot meal. You may then explore the sights there and relax, ready to conquer the next day.
The second day of our Meru hike involves taking a hard trail through the montane forest to reach the gigantic trees in the Moorland zone, which is located around the saddle between Little Meru and Meru.
When you arrive at the Saddle Huts, lunch will be ready. Your afternoon is free to relax and take in the scenery, although ambitious hikers can make the short walk to the top of Little Meru (3,820m) for beautiful views and proper acclimatization and return to Saddle Hut camp shortly before sunset.
We get up just after midnight and have a small lunch of hot snacks and beverages. After finishing our meal, we start the last hike to Socialist Peak via Rhino Point. This ascent will be difficult since we will be climbing through gravel and jagged rocks. This is the most psychologically and physically difficult part of the journey, but the gentle glow of orange indicating the sunrise will keep your spirits up.
On clear days, the peak offers spectacular views of the Meru Crater, the Ash cone, and Mount Kilimanjaro, which is 80 kilometers away. After our time at the summit, we then begin our descent from the top by heading straight down to Saddle Hut, where a nice meal awaits you. Following that, we shall continue trekking to Miriakamba hut for dinner and overnight
After breakfast, the route descends to Momella Gate via. On the way, you may spot buffaloes, baboons, and other wild creatures, as well as elephants if you’re lucky. You will arrive at the Momella Gate, where your driver will be waiting for you, after a 2-5hrs journey. After saying goodbye to your mountain crew, you will be taken back to your accommodation.
On your Mount Meru hike, we’ll supply purified, boiled drinking water and all your meals. Our trekking crew includes a cook (or cooks) experienced in accommodating various dietary needs, so please let us know in advance if you have any specific dietary requirements or restrictions.
On your 4 days Mt. Meru route hiking package, you’ll sleep in wooden huts on first, second and third day of your trip. These camps provide basic amenities, including tables, bunk beds, mattresses, pillows, kitchen, dining halls & toilets; ensuring a comfortable and hassle-free camping experience.
All our Mountain guides are certified Wilderness First Responders (WFR), equipped to manage emergencies and ensure a safe and well-guided climb for our clients. We prioritize thorough staff training, maintain high-quality medical kits, and adhere to established emergency protocols.
